A SPECIAL school in Brighouse has been rated Outstanding in a recent Ofsted school inspection.

Highbury School, in Lower Edge Road, Rastrick, improved on its previous rating of Good in 2013.

Highbury is a specialist school providing highly specialist education for children with a wide range of complex special educational needs and disabilities from ages 3-11.

In the Ofsted report, inspectors said school leaders are “highly committed to improving the life chances of pupils”.

They said: “The headteacher provides exceptional and dynamic leadership.

“She inspires all those she works with to strive to be the very best.

“Teachers have very high expectations of pupils. They are highly skilled in providing all pupils of differing abilities with significant challenges.

“This enables pupils to make rapid progress across all areas of the curriculum.

“Children in the early years provision are very happy. They are inquisitive about learning and blossom with the opportunities provided for them.

“The outstanding curriculum has been developed to be broad, balanced and personalised for each pupil.

“The behaviour of pupils in classrooms and around school is impeccable.”

Ofsted said more needs to be done to improve attendance, particularly tackling the issue of parents taking their children on holiday during term time.
