CAMERAS should be put up inside a cemetery to catch fly-tippers, according to one frustrated councillor.
Cllr Hassan Khan made the claims after it emerged furniture had been dumped in Bowling Cemetery.
A member of the public spotted the white sofa and black armchair was illegally dropped off next to a path running through the graveyard.
Cllr Hassan Khan, for Bowling and Barkerend, said he will speak to council officers about the mess left in the cemetery.
He said: “It’s a stupid thing to do.
“It’s a peaceful place and people shouldn’t dump their rubbish in a cemetery.
“People are taking advantage of the council and looking for somewhere to dump their things.
“In the future we need to put CCTV in the area to catch these people.
“Last year I helped clean up the cemetery along with three other councillors voluntarily.
“We are trying our best to keep it clean and tidy, but these people are coming and dumping stuff in there, which isn’t nice.
“Do these people have nothing in their hearts?
“This is a peaceful place and it’s emotional for the families to see this in a place where their loved ones are at rest.”
This is the latest fly-tipping to take place in Bradford, which earlier this year topped a table for the most fly-tipping incidents in the country.
Bradford was named as the worst hotspot after 852 cases were reported to the council in 2016/17.
According to statistics from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, local authorities dealt with more than one million fly-tipping incidents in 2016/17 - a rise of seven per cent from 2015/16 - at an estimated cost of £57.7 million.
Councillor Rizwana Jamil backed Cllr Khan's calls for CCTV to be put in the cemetery and said heavy fines will stop people from dumping rubbish.
She added: "Its disgusting. any fly tipping is unacceptable but to make and effort and go into a cemetery is totally unfair.
"As a a community we all need to be aware of this and identify who these people are so the appropriate action can be taken against them.
"I would support anything which would deter such actions.
"There has to be some punishment because we need as many deterrents as possible.
"Large fines is something which would deter people and any financial penalty is going to put people off."
