A MAN is in hospital with serious injuries following an incident at a children's play centre in Bradford this evening.

Police were called to Alphabet Zoo, Cemetery Road, at around 4.40pm to reports of concern for safety for an adult male.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "Officers attended and made continued efforts to detain the male but he then fell from a balcony.

"He was taken to hospital where his condition is described as serious but is not believed to be life-threatening.

"No one else was injured during the incident."

Due to the nature of the incident it has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

Owner Ashiq Hussain described the dramatic scenes in the centre this afternoon.

It's believed the man managed to get through the security doors, before running through the centre "causing mayhem", attacking customers and then falling from the balcony.

Mr Hussain said: "We were frightened. Someone just barged in, ran through the centre. Then police came running through the centre."

"Police were on the scene within seconds. We calmed the situation down, we got everybody out.

"Something like this has never happened."

He said the the centre was evacuated, but there was a lot of "distressed" customers.

"We are closed until the cordon is lifted," he said.

A post from Alphabet Zoo on Facebook says: "Due to major incident, the Alphabet Zoo is currently closed, but we will reopen as soon as we can.

"It is following an incident inside the play centre which meant we needed to close. Police cordon has been placed inside the Alphabet Zoo and are investigating."

"We understand that this is our one of the busiest months as schools are out, with long queues a regular sight - especially around afternoon and evening season, we apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused and appreciate your understanding."
