The Telegraph & Argus celebrates its 150th anniversary this year and in honour of the occasion we are printing a story from our archives every day for 150 days.
Today we look at the Telegraph & Argus Thursday 4 July 1968: Forty Bradford youngsters had the time of their lives during a 12-day stay at Bradford Cinderella Club’s holiday home at Hest Bank, Morecambe. Even the great storm didn’t dampen the holiday atmosphere, although it did stop the cricket and football, and a chance of a dip in the home’s swimming pool. Creating lasting memories for the children were Uncle John and Auntie Emmie, with the help of five other staff members.
Every year several busloads of children were given the opportunity to spend two weeks at the coastal home thanks to the charity which was opened in the 1900s. As well as a holiday there were also trips to the Gaumont.
Unfortunately, Hest Bank “Bradford-by-the-Sea” closed in the late 1970s after it was damaged by a storm and became too costly to continue to run. The Bradford institution still continues today, supported by many Bradford businesses helping to put a smile on the faces of many disadvantaged children across the district.
