She is Britain's hottest young music star, with her debut album at the top of the charts, and when Kate Nash wanted to shoot her latest video she looked no further than Bradford.

Kate spent yesterday at the Alhambra theatre filming the video for her new single, Mouthwash, with the cast of Starlight Express.

The singer-songwriter was on stage shooting the futuristic video with performers from the roller-skating musical, currently running at the Alhambra.

"The director saw the show and loved the visual images, and he wanted to use them in the video," said Starlight Express company manager Neil White. "When he approached us we jumped at the chance. Kate's a big star, she's the one everyone is talking about, and it's a fantastic opportunity for our performers to work with her.

"She filmed some scenes with the cast when the show was at the Bristol Hippodrome and she has come up to Bradford to put the finishing touches to the video.

"Without giving too much away, Kate doesn't do any roller-skating herself but she's transported into Starlight Express. It's as if the show has been put into the video. The cast have learned two new routines for it and they're wearing the Starlight costumes, it's going to look great. The look is '80s futuristic glam rock meets Transformers - all slightly avant-garde!

"It's the first time we've been asked as a cast to appear in a pop video, we're very excited."

Neil, from Cullingworth, said roller-skating has become fashionable in pop circles.

"Madonna used roller disco in one of her last videos, it's in vogue at the moment," he said. "There's a huge roller disco in London."

Kate, 19, whose album Made of Bricks shot to Number 1 last week, is being hailed as the new street poet' of young Britain. Singing in a London accent about boyfriend rows, drinking with mates and hanging out at parties, her songs epitomise 21st century teenage life in suburbia.

She emerged through MySpace, winning support from Lily Allen, and released her debut single in February. Her second single, Foundations, went straight to Number 2 in June.

Starlight Express, on at the Alhambra until September 8, is a fast-paced family show, performed entirely on roller-skates at speeds of up to 30mph, about a group of rival railway engines competing in a thrilling race. With a score by Andrew Lloyd-Webber, it is the second longest-running musical in West End history.

"It's going amazingly well here in Bradford," said Neil. "Audiences have been loving it, we've had standing ovations."

He said Gemma Atkins, the show's leading lady who was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary in the interval after injuring her foot during a performance last week, was now recovered and is expected to re-join the show this week.
