The Telegraph & Argus celebrates it 150th anniversary this year and in honour of the occasion we are printing a story from our archives every day for 150 days.
Today we look at the Telegraph & Argus Tuesday, May 25, 1976: Thirty-one-year-old Richard Dunn from Undercliffe, had challenged the world heavyweight champ Muhammad Ali during a boxing match in Munich, Germany.
Dunn, the fifth Briton to challenge for the richest prize in sport since the last war and a former para in the Territorial Army, unfortunately caught Ali at his brilliant best.
He was sent to the canvas five times and despite his bravery was finally knocked out in the fifth round.
He did however, have the satisfaction of stopping the champion dancing.
A month before the big fight Richard Dunn appeared on This Is Your Life and Ali was a special guest
The fight came just seven months after the gruelling Ali-Frazier Thriller in Manilla which had pushed Ali to the very limits.
Dunn, who received a prize purse of £52,000 for his efforts, is the only notable Yorkshireman ever to flight Ali and the match will always be remembered as the very last time Ali would knock down any opponent in the ring in his boxing career. It was also the last time Ali fought in Europe.
