Archers will go back to basics for the Yorkshire Longbow Championships this weekend in Cross Hills, Keighley.

Some competitors are likely to dress in medieval clothing for the championships on Saturday.

The Yorkshire Archery Association is hosting the contest from 10am to 4.30pm at South Craven School.

Spokesman Tim Mason said the traditional English Longbow had enjoyed a resurgence of interest in recent years.

He said: "Many archers have been drawn to it because it gets them back to the fundamentals of archery, which can sometimes be obscured by the gadgetry of modern bows.

"The English longbow is made of wood and shoots wooden arrows with feather fletches.

"No sights or other gadgets are used - only the archer's instincts.

"This will make for a real challenge at the championships, where distances of up to 100 yards will be shot."
