The fate of a Guiseley estate's peacock population will be decided next week.

Feelings have been running high in the Hawkstones area ever since Councillor Graham Latty responded to complaints by suggesting moving the birds to a new home.

Coun Latty, who has always promised no action would be taken before all householders' opinions were taken into account, hopes the issue can be resolved at a meeting at Guiseley Methodist Church on Thursday, August 14.

He said: "I have called the meeting and sent a letter out to invite people from the estate to come along and make a decision about what they want to do."

The peacocks are believed to have originally come from Manor Farm, at Old Hollins Hall.

Coun Latty was asked to do something about problems they were causing in the Hawkstones area - such as digging up gardens, creating waste and keeping people awake.

Some residents, however, say the birds add colour to the estate and have called for them to be left alone.
