Primary school children in Bradford have produced the district's best ever results in English, maths and science.

In all three subjects, based on Sats - Standard Assessment Tests - taken this year by 11-year-olds, there was a marked rise.

Some 75 per cent of pupils attained the expected standard of Level Four in English.

A total of 73 per cent achieved the grade in maths and 82 per cent in science.

These figures compare favourably with the results recorded last year where 73 per cent reached or bettered the Government benchmark in English, 68 per cent in maths and 78.3 per cent in science.

Kath Tunstall, strategic director of services to children and young people, said: "Congratulations to all pupils, parents, teaching and support staff who have helped achieve these excellent results.

"But I also acknowlege that we cannot rest on our laurels - we still have a long way to go and we must build on this success."

Despite the improvement, Bradford remains below the national average in all three subjects.

A total of 80 per cent of 11-year-olds across England attained Level Four in English, 77 per cent in maths and 88 per cent in science.
