In the same month as World Environment Day, pupils at a Bradford school have established a tree nursery in order to help establish a range of native species across the district.

Pupils at Thornton Grammar School have joined forces with Brunel Housing Day Service (BHDS) as part of the green scheme.

Year 8 youngsters have planted around 120 foot-high saplings at the school and will tend them for the next two years before they are moved to BHDS sites throughout the district.

Around 15 pupils set to begin a GCSE in horticulture from September have been chosen to take part in the project.

Thornton Grammar assistant head teacher Andy Nichols said: "The scheme will provide pupils with an appreciation of the environment and an understanding of sustainable development issues and teamwork.

"It will also tie-in with their understanding of global warming."

Thirteen-year-old Bhavik Mistry said he was looking forward to watching the oak, beech, ash and horse chestnut saplings grow tall.
