The lengthy saga of a melting road has been resolved after a visit by Council highway bosses.

The Telegraph & Argus reported last month how Gareth Gregory, 39, had been in dispute with Bradford Council about the road in Northdale Crescent, Bankfoot, Bradford, which melts in warm weather.

At the time, the Council said the road surface, which had been re-laid 12 months earlier, met all required standards, although it said it would continue to monitor the situation and carry out repairs when necessary.

During a meeting between Mr Gregory and John Blackburn, the Council's assistant director of transportation and highways, and Andy Whelan, senior engineer for traffic and highways in Bradford South, Mr Whelan admitted there had been a problem with the road surface as it had been re-laid during hot weather and had been torn up by large vehicles.

Work further up the road, in Northdale Mount, has already been tabled for this financial year.

Mr Blackburn said this presented an opportunity to extend the work and cover the melting patch outside Mr Gregory's house.

He said: "The surface will be much better. We will dig the road up and resurface it with a black surface top rather then the chippings."

Mr Whelan said he estimated extending the work would cost £3,000.

Mr Gregory said: "The road is going to be finally put right after 12 months of unbelievable bureaucracy."

Previously the Council said it was willing to compensate Mr Gregory for damage to his car and the interior of his home, but was not prepared to pay to fix the road.

Mr Gregory said: "I'm not bothered about the compensation, just so long as we get a decent road surface where cars can go without pulling it up and children can play without fear of hurting themselves."
