A discreet sexual health message is to be delivered to young people enjoying a drink in pubs over the coming weeks.

Up to 20,000 beer mats are being distributed to premises, highlighting the dangers of unprotected sex.

They are being handed out by the Bradford and Airedale Chlamydia Screening Programme in a bid to raise awareness of chlamydia, the UK's fastest spreading sexually transmitted infection.

The beer mats also carry a telephone number people can ring to find out more about a local screening programme.

One of the first pubs to back the campaign is the Old White Horse in Bingley where pub manager Nicki Goddard said she was more than happy to promote the campaign to customers.

The disease affects at least one in ten sexually active people under the age of 25 Screenings are offered at more than 120 places across the district, including GP surgeries and family planning clinics, but also other non-traditional sites, such as community venues, careers advice centres and youth settings.

The screening involves testing a urine sample. Anyone with chlamydia will receive free antibiotic treatment.

The disease is transmitted through unprotected sex and affects both men and women. Most people who have chlamydia have no symptoms.

If left untreated it can lead to pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancies and infertility.

Chlamydia screening programme co-ordinator for Bradford and Airedale Teaching Primary Care Trust (tPCT), Liz Ellerton said: "Chlamydia is a big issue and I would encourage all sexually active people aged under 25 to consider taking a test. It is free and totally confidential.

"One of the problems we are facing is that 70 per cent of people have no symptoms and the infection can be dormant for years without anyone being aware of it."
