A teenager has been locked up for hitting a bus passenger on the head with a bottle.

Matthew Murrell, who has learning difficulties, struck Glyn Price, 58, causing a 5cm wound needing hospital treatment.

Bradford Crown Court heard today that Mr Price was on a bus in Brighouse when Murrell committed the unprovoked attack.

The 18-year-old, who admitted causing actual bodily harm on March 23, was sent to detention for a total of eight months.

Murrell also pleaded guilty to stealing lager from Sainsbury's in Brighouse and assaulting two staff members.

Prosecutor Richard Smith said a security guard was punched on the nose and a supervisor bitten on the hand when they challenged Murrell about the theft.

Murrell also admitted criminal damage to a caravan. He did £100 damage when he smashed a window.

Murrell's barrister Stephen Wood said the teenager had a long-standing mental impairment.

He was trapped and could do nothing to improve the condition which a psychologist warned would deteriorate.

Mr Wood said there was nowhere for Murrell but detention.

He was not the main player in the offending but was egged on by others who did not labour under the same difficulties.

"This young man will probably end up through the revolving door of Armley. It's a very depressing story," Mr Wood said.

Judge Penny Belcher sent Murrell, of Church Bank, Sowerby Bridge, to custody for six months for assaulting Mr Price and for two additional months for attacking the staff at Sainsbury's and damaging the caravan.
