The Lord Mayor of Bradford has proved that, when it comes to the crunch, he will do almost anything to raise money for charity.

That includes walking across 20 feet of razor-sharp pieces of glass from 1,000 smashed wine bottles.

But it was a case of mind over matter for the Bingley Councillor, Robin Owens, when he joined around 25 others to take on the Blaze Glass Walk Challenge at Bradford's Cedar Court Hotel last night.

Brave participants, including Telegraph & Argus reporter Rebecca Wright, were first put into the right state of mind at a motivational psychology seminar before tentatively putting their best feet forward on glass.

According to the company behind the challenge, the hardest part of the Zen-like practice is not walking on the glass but "walking through the wall of fear" that inhibits those taking part.

And both Councillor Owens and Rebecca managed to put their fears behind them and escape without a scratch. Councillor Owens slipped at one point but managed to regain his composure and bravely stepped back on the shards.

He said: "I feel relieved. It wasn't what was under my feet that was the problem, it was trying to keep my balance. I found myself slipping a bit.

"It is definitely a case of mind over matter; I felt fairly relaxed. It is not my idea of fun but I would do it again for a good cause."

Money was raised for the Lord Mayor's charities - Bradford Cancer Support Centre's Daisy Appeal and the Ear Trust's Listening for Life Appeal.
