All things quintessentially associated with our fine county were evident across the district as residents celebrated Yorkshire Day.

The day would not have been the same without Yorkshire puddings, town criers and a Punch and Judy show - and Bradford and the district did not let Yorkshire folk down.

Residents were woken with the official Yorkshire Day declaration by town criers in Ilkley and Skipton, Chris Richards and Kevin Griffiths.

Traditional Yorkshire fare was on offer in Bradford's Centenary Square, and in Haworth and Ilkley, courtesy of tourist information centres. Residents also took part in a quiz for a chance to win a Taylor's tea hamper.

Generous Yorkshireman Stan Roy, manager of Bradford-based tailors, Greenwoods, ensured the first three customers to present him with a copy of yesterday's Telegraph & Argus left with must-have flat caps.

Sue Johnson also wore her love of her county not on her sleeve but on her head, as she donned a Yorkshire Pudding hat in Ilkley.

The day would not have been the same without a rousing rendition of "On Ilkla Moor Bah't at" in Ilkley and Clifton Silver Band also entertained.

Keighley was the place to be to experience a Punch and Judy show and members of the town council marked the day with their annual Tea on the Square event.

A 45-year-old double-decker bus, restored in the livery of the former Keighley Corporation Tramways Department, brought elderly people to the Town Hall Square for the afternoon.

In Cross Hills, the local Manorlands support group held a Yorkshire-themed fun day at St Peter's Church. Guests were also invited to decipher terms such as Intitotterday' and Smarrerweeim' in a Yorkshire Speyk' dialect quiz.

They also enjoyed Yorkshire tea, ice cream, a balloon hunt, a raffle and a treasure hunt.

One Bradford man who is in no doubt Yorkshire is the best place on the planet is Yorkshire Society chairman, Keith Madeley.

Speaking at the official Yorkshire Day celebrations in Hull, Mr Madeley donned a pin-stripe suit, with the word "Yorkshire" running through it.

He said: "We have had a fantastic day, the weather has been gorgeous. The people of Yorkshire are so welcoming, that is what people love about the county. There are so many good things about the county, the tea and the Yorkshire puddings. It is the best place to be."
