Now that hot summer weather is here, gardeners can think about what they can do to protect their plants from the drying effects of sun and wind. A layer of mulch - gravel, bark or old grass clippings for example - helps retain moisture and reduces your need to get the watering can out.
It cuts evaporation and also keeps weeds under control. When you do water, remember to move the mulch away temporarily to wet the ground underneath.
