EARLY years provision at a children’s centre has been branded inadequate by education watchdog Ofsted.

Inspectors visited Wyke Community and Children’s Centre, Huddersfield Road, Wyke, in November, judging personal development, behaviour and welfare and effectiveness of leadership and management to be inadequate.

The overall rating given was also inadequate, a departure from a previous inspection in 2013 where the provision was rated as being good.

The centre says it is now working with Bradford Council to restore the rating and it has already taken the required steps to comply with Ofsted's requirements.

The report outlines: “The provider has failed to maintain their legal responsibility to notify Ofsted of all the names of the directors of the company and changes of the nominated person. This

means that not all individuals who make up the company have been fully assessed for their suitability.

“The provider does not ensure that all areas of the nursery used by the children are effectively maintained, fit for purpose and comply with health and safety legislation.

“The conservatory area is dirty and cold due to the lack of heating.

“Information about children’s learning and development is not shared effectively enough with other early years providers that children attend, to make sure there is continuity between settings.

“Staff do not obtain information from all parents about their children’s prior learning when they first start at the nursery, to enable them to fully enhance children’s development from the very start.”

However, outcomes for children and the quality of teaching, learning and assessment were rated as good and the report outlines that staff understand how young children learn and develop and support children with special educational needs and/or disabilities “particularly well”.

Inspectors also says staff interact well with children to question and challenge their thinking and children make good progress.

Children are also described as being "happy and settled" with warm and caring relationships with staff.

A spokesperson for the centre said: "The Board and Senior Management at Wyke are deeply disappointed with the outcome of our recent Ofsted inspection.

"We have already taken the required steps to comply with Ofsted’s findings.

"We are working with Ofsted and Bradford Council to restore our rating in the very near future. We can assure all our site's users that we continue to provide quality childcare."
