A HUSBAND and wife team who run a popular local butchers shop have been nominated for a 2017 Community Stars Award.

John and Karen Summers, of John Summers Butchers in Clayton, have been nominated by their daughter Maxine and customers alike as they regularly go above and beyond in helping others.

The honours are organised by the Telegraph & Argus and Bradford Council to recognise unsung heroes across the district.

Those who make a difference in their local communities can be nominated across eight categories in the seventh annual awards.

Maxine said she felt her parents truly deserved a Community Stars award and that they fell into many of the categories, such as being good neighbours, fundraisers, volunteers, community groups and the new business category too.

“John and Karen will go out of their way to help anyone within the village from delivering their orders, helping cross the road to being a personal taxi for customers too,” she said. “They have a fantastic sense of humour, always making people laugh and delivering the best quality customer service.

“They both help with the Clayton Dickensian Market, every year they collect donations at their shop for the charity stalls, such as bric-a-brac and bottles. They run the barbecue on the day which is for the Dickensian Market charities, earning over £1,000 on the barbecue.

“They help anyone within the village from listening to their customers, going out of their way, deliveries to school, nursing homes, convents.

“They also give food to the homeless on a regular basis.

“John attends the regular Clayton community groups for the updates within the area and also the police meetings in Clayton too, to ensure he is being the good neighbour that he is.

“A lot of people recognise his and Karen’s hard work and with this award it would be fantastic to show our appreciation for their kindness.”

The winners will be announced at a ceremony to be held at the Midland Hotel on Wednesday, December 6, where each category winner will be honoured with the Bradford Medal.

The awards are part of the People Can Make a Difference campaign and are sponsored by Better Start Bradford, which runs schemes in the Bowling, Barkerend, Bradford Moor and Little Horton areas of the city, aiming to give babies and children in those areas a better start in life.

This time the awards are also looking to recognise Bradford’s unsung businesses who go above and beyond to make a real difference to the people of the district.

Nominations are being sought in the following categories: Community Group, Fundraiser, Young Active Citizens, Good Neighbour, Volunteer, Community Champion, Business Can Make a Difference Award, and the sponsored award Better Start Bradford Outstanding Contribution to Volunteering.

Nominations must be submitted before September 25.
