A MAN was taken to hospital via air ambulance this afternoon after suffering head injuries in an assault on a Bradford city centre street.
Large crowds gathered as the ambulance landed directly outside City Hall just before 3pm.
Paramedics were then seen making their way towards Randall Well Street, which was cordoned off by police from the side of the Alhambra theatre to the bottom of the junction of Great Horton Road and Chester Street.
Minutes after the helicopter landed, one onlooker described two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle "screeching away" from the Randall Well Street back towards City Park.
It is understood a transfer was then made to the air ambulance before it left the scene.
A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said the man had been assaulted, with the location given as Great Horton Road.
He confirmed he had been taken to hospital by air ambulance where he has since undergone a CT scan.
Police described the man's condition as stable and said his injuries were "non life-threatening."
The main police activity within the cordon appeared to be focused on the section of the street between the Bradford College Advanced Technology Centre and the Love Apple building.
One passer-by, who did not wish to be named, said he understood there had been a fight, which had started higher up Great Horton Road and then "spilled down the street" towards Randall Well Street.
He said the incident had involved somebody on a motorbike, and said he thought that "one or two" people had been injured and taken away for treatment.
Other onlookers said while they had seen police and ambulances arrive, they had not been made aware of the details of the incident.
CID officers are now also in attendance, and the full length of Randall Well Street remains cordoned off.
Enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.
