RECORD numbers of people across the Bradford district are set to cast their vote in next week’s General Election, it was revealed today.

Bradford Council said that 350,271 people had registered to vote on Thursday when the country goes to the polls.

The figure is the highest number since the Bradford Metropolitan District was created in 1974.

The numbers are up 8.6 per cent from the last General Election in 2015, when the total electorate across the district’s five parliamentary constituencies was 322,496.

The Shipley constituency has seen the highest number of registrations, with 73,133.

The seat has been held by Conservative Philip Davies since 2005, who enjoyed a majority of 9,624 last time.

Keighley has the second highest number of registrations with 71,429, with Conservative candidate Kris Hopkins hoping to build on his majority of 3,053 from two years ago.

In the three Bradford seats, 70,389 have registered to vote in Bradford East, 67,752 in Bradford South, and 67,568 in Bradford West.

All three seats are currently held by Labour, with Imran Hussain, Judith Cummins, and Naz Shah holding majorities of 7,084, 6,450, and 11,420 respectively in 2015.

The Council said this year had seen a particular increase in the number of young people registering to vote, with key issues set to include Brexit, the economy, education, and the NHS.

Kersten England, chief executive of the Council and acting returning officer for Bradford, said: “Our elections team have been working hard all-year-round to ensure people are registered.

“Since the election was announced we have supported the Electoral Commission Register to Vote campaign and launched our own social media campaign encouraging people to register with support from local residents and celebrities.

“Now people have registered I would encourage them to go out next Thursday and vote and have their say on the future of our country. Bradford has a long history of promoting democracy and this is everyone’s chance to take part in this process.”
