POLICE are examining footage of two dangerous overtaking manoeuvres on busy roads in Bradford, including one that left the driver who filmed it “lost for words.”

Videos of the incidents have been submitted to officers involved in Operation Steerside, the district-wide road safety crackdown by West Yorkshire Police which has snared 9,233 motorists in the past 16 months.

The first was captured by a driver heading back from Bradford to his home in Wilsden just before 5pm on Sunday.

As he is driving along Toller Lane towards the junction with Haworth Road, a green Audi overtakes him on the wrong side of the road before then continuing around a traffic island.

The car then pulls back across the ahead-only lane at the traffic lights and is forced to wait.

The driver, who did not wish to be named, said: “The first thing I saw was him just shooting past me in a green flash.

“If someone had stepped off that traffic island they would have been cleaned out.

“These people just think they are showing off. I only got the dashcam at Christmas, but any footage that can help prevent this sort of thing happening has to be a good thing.”

In the second video, the driver involved, who again wished to remain anonymous, said he was around a mile away from his Clayton home when the incident on Bradford Road occurred.

His car is overtaken by a Toyota Auris driving on the wrong side of the road towards the junction with Hunters Park Avenue, which then swerves past an oncoming car and travels off at speed, again passing a traffic island on the wrong side.

The driver said: “I was actually indicating right as he approached me from behind, and I couldn’t believe it when he just continued past me. He must have seen I was indicating, but he came pretty quick, I’d say he was doing around 50mph.

“The driver was young and I checked with the DVLA and found the car to be insured, so I presume he is registered.

“It’s just so stupid, you’re lost for words. I can only assume that driving like this gives these people some kind of a buzz.”

Sergeant Cameron Buchan, who is leading the police operation, praised drivers who were now sending video footage of incidents to the Steerside e-mail address on a regular basis.

He said: “Driving around the wrong side of a traffic island is an offence already, but it would be roped in with an offence of driving without due care.

“They are exactly the type of incidents Steerside is all about.

“Driving like that tends to result in an accident, although thankfully it didn’t in these cases. The drivers have gained nothing by their manner of driving, and put themselves and others at risk.”
