Essential safety works to a main road through Menston are due to start this month.

The work on the A6038 Bradford Road/Otley Road near Ellar Gardens will start on Monday, July 16. The road will be closed for 16 weeks from the night of Sunday, July 22.

Bradford Council is replacing a buried stone culvert with a new structure. Traffic will be diverted via the A65 and the A660.

An exhibition was held at Otley Civic Centre yesterday to give residents the chance to find out more about the scheme and ask questions.

Exhibitions will be held at Menston Library, on Thursday, July 12, between 10am and 5pm, Burley Library on Thursday, July 19, between 10am and 5pm, and Otley Buttercross Site on Saturday, July 21, from 10am until 3pm. Leaflets have been delivered to households in the area.

Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, the executive member for environment and culture, said: "There has been some confusion recently about the length of time the road will be closed. At present the road will be closed for 16 weeks from July 22, but we are working with our contractors to see if we can shorten that closure."

The road will be open to pedestrians.
