Police have arrested a man in connection with a vicious assault during which a shot was fired in the street.

The victim of the attack was subjected to a severe beating, in White Abbey Road, Whetley Hill, Bradford, and needed hospital treatment but did not immediately come forward to police.

The attack took place outside a row of shops during the evening of Wednesday, June 27.

Police were investigating reports of shots being fired during the disturbance. Detectives now believe a firearm was discharged into the air to break up the fight.

The victim has since contacted the police and a 28-year-old man was today arrested at his home in Bradford in connection with the assault and is being held in custody for questioning.

Officers are still seeking the person who discharged the firearm.

Detective Inspector Noel Devine, of Bradford North CID, said the 30-year-old victim, of Bradford, attended hospital after the incident and was treated and released.

He urged any witnesses to the incident, or anyone with information about the background to it or who was involved, to come forward.

"We are continuing to look into the reasons for the incident and are making house to house inquiries," said Det Insp Devine. "We are also anxious to trace whoever discharged the firearm.

"We take all incidents involving firearms extremely seriously and investigate them thoroughly and we want to hear from the public about any activity involving firearms."

Five Bradford men, aged between 20 and 35, have previously been arrested and questioned in connection with the inquiry and released on police bail.
