With the national smoking ban now in force, there is even more opportunity to give up smoking. And if all the health benefits weren't enough, did you know there are environmental benefits too?
Smokers throw away nearly 20 million cigarette packets and 300 million butts a day adding to litter and the amount of rubbish going to landfill.
Incorrectly extinguished cigarettes start fires in fragile habitats like heathland and moor and the paper used to wrap the tobacco is from intensively-managed forests. Lastly, tobacco is dried with fuel that could be used for heating or cooking and is grown on land that could be used for food.
