A Bradford MP is being warned Labour's failure to tackle a housing crisis has put his seat in danger.

The key marginal of Bradford West is among 47 constituencies on a danger list' circulating among Tory MPs at Westminster.

In all 47 seats, tiny Labour majorities are dwarfed by the number of homeless families on the local authority's housing list.

In Bradford West, Marsha Singh defends a majority of 3,026, while 41,685 households are being forced to live in temporary accommodation.

According to the list, the number of children in the area who are living in overcrowded conditions is also larger than the Labour majority - 20,008.

Now senior party figures fear those on the homeless lists could turn against Labour if the government does not address the housing shortage.

A source said: "Labour is under threat if those on the lists grow increasingly disaffected. They are traditional Labour voters and without them Gordon Brown could struggle at the next election."

Mr Singh said: "I know housing is a massive problem and I have repeatedly called for more houses to be built. It has been a big issue at my surgeries since 1997. The Government want to build more homes, but it is also responsibility of the Conservative-led Bradford council."

Communities Secretary Ruth Kelly, former Work and Pensions Secretary Andrew Smith and Education Minister Bill Rammell are also on the danger list.

More and more Labour figures are recognising housing as a badly neglected issue, as an increase in the number of people living alone fuels demand.

Local authority housing stocks were severely depleted by Margaret Thatcher's right-to-buy policy in the 1980s - a policy Labour left virtually untouched.

Around 220,000 new homes a year are needed to prevent an escalation in the crisis but, even with a recent rise in construction, only 180,000 are being built.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said he wants to launch a new era of council-house building, with fresh money expected in October's spending review.
