A COLOURFUL parade saw giant handmade puppets and masks touring the city centre over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

The parade was the latest in a series of arts and music events planned to attract visitors to Darley Street, the top of town, Kirkgate Market and the Oastler Centre.

T&A reader Munib Hussein sent us this video of the parade going past.

Cecil Green Arts, whose workshop was destroyed in last year’s Drummond Mill fire, had held free workshops throughout March and April teaching local people how to make the puppets and masks by hand. They then displayed their weird and wonderful creations in the parade, accompanied by the Punjabi Roots Academy and Moseke Music.

Harry Kingham, one of the artistic directors of Cecil Green Arts, said: “We got a really positive response.

“There were a lot of people around, doing their normal Saturday shopping and stuff, and they all stopped to watch and some people joined in with the parade.

“We stopped where Bank Street meets Tyrrel Street for a ten-minute performance.”

The series of free events, called Creative Streets, will end on Sunday, April 30, with a free event called Bradford Capital of Cycling.

The event is designed to coincide with the Tour de Yorkshire, as its third leg will depart from Bradford on the same day.

From 8am to 11am and 1pm to 4pm, people can have a go on a range of adaptive bikes designed to cater to all ages and abilities.

Participants can also be inspired by the Tour de Yorkshire cyclists and compete a slow or timed hill climb race, track stand or wheelie challenges.
