It's a feather in Bradford's cap that such a prestigious outfit like Opera North chooses to play here.

But judging by Wednesday night's turn out at the Alhambra, Bradford audiences don't quite appreciate it.

There was only a smattering of an audience for an elaborate, full-blooded production of one of the opera world's most captivating tales, Rigoletto.

It was barely a quarter full, but that didn't seem to hinder the cast who put on a quite magical show.

Alan Opie, powerful in the title role, takes the plaudits as the man who tries to protect his innocent daughter from the dangers of a corrupt world, only to find that you can love someone too much.

But other cast members, notably Linda Richardson (as Gilda, his daughter) and Rafael Rojas (Il Duca) deserve great credit.

The setting of the piece in contemporary Italy may upset traditionalists, but it worked very well.

The score contains some of Guiseppe Verdi's most powerful - and best known - music, played wonderfully by the orchestra led by Leo Hussain.

If you haven't seen it yet, Friday's your last chance to see this particular touring production, and to show that Bradford does deserve to be visited by such prestigious companies.

* Opera North stage The Magic Flute on Thursday night, Rigoletto on Friday night and Didi/Les Noces on Saturday.
