Excitement was bubbling at a Bradford school when its pupils joined more than 40,000 other youngsters across the country in a national bid to make a new world record for the most people blowing bubbles at the same time.

With bubble pots and wands at the ready, 156 children at Netherleigh and Rossefield Independent School in Parsons Road, Heaton blew themselves right into the Guinness Book of World Records yesterday.

The record-breaking attempt was organised by bubble-makers Gizillion and smashed the previous record made in 1999 in London when 23,680 football fans blew bubbles for one minute.

The experience has gone on to inspire other bubble-blowers to think about what possible world records they would like to break next .

William Ritchie, eight, wants to climb the highest mountain, Hafsa Malik, ten, wants to build the tallest-ever penny tower and seven-year-old Romana Khan wants to do the highest jump on a trampoline.

Headteacher Mary Midgley said: "It was just a bit of fun to mark the end of term. "
