Two new primary schools could be created and another extended to cope with Bradford's growing population.

Bradford Council's executive has been asked to approve a proposal to look at creating new schools on the site of All Saints Primary School in Kennion Street, Little Horton, and on the site occupied by Chapel Grange Special School in Rhodesway.

A report by Kath Tunstall, the Council's strategic director of services to children and young people, says there are areas of Bradford where the high birth rate and continuing migration is leading to population growth and causing a shortage of school places.

The building which houses All Saints Primary will become free when the existing school moves to a new site in Little Horton next year, and it is intended that the new school will be established with effect from September 2009.

The site of Chapel Grange Special School will become available when the school is transferred to a joint mainstream site under the Building Schools for the Future programme.

The site should become available in 2009.

The proposed opening date of the new school will depend on whether refurbishment or rebuild takes place.

Also, following a consultation with teacher and governors, Lidget Green Primary School could increase the number of new pupils from 60 to 75 from September 2009.

A study of primary school places was carried out between late March and early June and the results showed more primary places were needed in other areas of Bradford and the districts of Bradford Moor, Fagley, Thornbury, Laisterdyke, Tyersal, Tong, Barkerend, Holme Wood, and West Bowling in particular would be monitored in case further primary places are needed in the future.

Councillor Colin Gill, the Council's executive member for children and young people's services, said: "The current number of primary school places available in some parts of the district does not match the number of children who will be entering the education system in the next few years, so something has to be done."

The executive will consider the report at a meeting on Tuesday.
