A dog was abandoned after being tied to a lamppost with a rope bound so tight that it was almost strangled.
The tan-coloured male mastiff, was rescued by two RSPCA inspectors who freed it from the lamppost in a ginnel, off Parsons Road, Heaton, Bradford, at 3pm yesterday.
Inspector Rachel Oprysk said: "When we found the dog, he was absolutely exhausted. The black rope was tied so tight round its neck that it had almost strangled itself. If we'd have got there any later, it could have been dead."
Mrs Oprysk said the dog, a young adult, had appeared to be in a fairly good condition before its ordeal. The animal is now being looked after at the RSPCA's Mount Street Centre, off Leeds Road, Bradford.
Anyone with information about it should contact Insp Oprysk on 0870 5555 999.
