Travellers were today warned to expect delays as police stepped up security at Leeds-Bradford Airport and Bradford train stations following the latest terror threat to Britain.

Extra police patrols including armed officers have been drafted in at the Yeadon airport in the wake of the failed car bomb attacks in London and at Glasgow Airport at the weekend.

West Yorkshire Police said the region was not at more risk than any other part of the country but it was necessary to reassure and safeguard the public.

A police spokesman said: "Following the incidents in London and Glasgow we have increased our presence and stepped up security at Leeds-Bradford Airport.

"Inevitably this extra security will mean some delay and we ask people to be patient and leave plenty of extra time for travelling.

"We ask people to remain vigilant and want to reassure people in West Yorkshire that we will do our utmost to ensure the continued safety of all our communities."

A British Transport Police spokesman said security had been stepped up at both Bradford Interchange and Forster Square stations in direct response to the events of the weekend.

She said more BTP officers were patrolling trains and sniffer dogs were believed to be in use.

She warned passengers to be extra vigilant and to be understanding and leave more time for their journeys. Officers would be using their powers of stop and search, under the Terrorism Act, to check passengers heading to trains.

"The increased security is centred on larger stations, and those which interchange with airports," she said.

"Vehicles on approach roads to main-line stations, as well as individual passengers, will be subject to random searches by officers for the foreseeable future."
