Bradford MP Gerry Sutcliffe has landed his dream job under a Gordon Brown administration - securing promotion to Sports Minister.

The Bradford South MP had an agonising wait until 5pm yesterday while the new PM decided which other jobs to hand out after appointing his new cabinet.

As predicted by the Telegraph & Argus earlier this month, Mr Sutcliffe's eight-year Government career saw his second promotion in 13 months.

In time-honoured sporting style, Mr Sutcliffe's first reaction was: "I am over the moon. It is absolutely fantastic. It is the job I always wanted. It is totally unbelievable.

"I am shocked and and I keep thinking I cannot believe it. If there was any job in Government I ever wanted it was this - sports minister."

The Telegraph & Argus reported earlier this month that the Bradford South MP was tipped to be promoted to his new position, but Mr Sutcliffe stressed it would be up to the new PM to decide - although admitted it would be his "dream job."

Mr Sutcliffe became an MP in 1994 after winning a by-election when Keighley MP Ann Cryer's husband Bob Cryer died.

After a few years on the backbenches Mr Sutcliffe became a parliamentary private secretary - unpaid ministerial aide - to now Deputy and Commons leader and Women's minister Harriet Harman. Then he served as PPS to former Transport minister Stephen Byers before moving to the Government whips office in 1999.

After four years he moved to become a junior minister at the former Department for Trade and Industry until 2006.

Mr Sutcliffe was then promoted in May last year in the in the biggest and final reshuffle of former Prime Minister Tony Blair's career when he was promoted to junior minister in the Home Office.

The department split in May to also form the Ministry of Justice but the Bradford MP kept his job as prisons minister in the new department.

Mr Sutcliffe holds the Bradford South seat with a comfortable majority of 9,167.
