A new £1 million household waste recycling centre will open in Bradford on Monday, aimed at boosting recycling and reducing fly-tipping.

The new centre, the eighth Bradford Council runs in the district, will be open to the public in Midland Road, Manningham, from 8am.

The new household waste recycling centre is set to help recycling in the area, which has previously been without a facility of this type, and to help reduce the amount of fly-tipping of old sofas, fridges and freezers by providing an outlet for bulky and excess household waste.

Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, executive member for environment and culture, said: "This is a major step forward for the Council's waste management.

"By offering facilities close to people's homes to recycle a range of materials we can ensure more rubbish is turned into something useful rather than ending up in landfill."

The household waste centre offers facilities for recycling glass bottles and jars, green garden waste, cans, batteries, textiles, fridges and freezers, electrical items such as televisions, paper, wood, cardboard and plastics as well as containers for larger domestic items which cannot fit into household green wheeled bins.

It will serve north Bradford, including Manningham, Girlington, Heaton, Frizinghall, Bolton, Undercliffe, Wrose and Idle and will be open from 8am until 5pm Monday to Friday, 8am until 4pm on Saturday and 9am until 4pm on Sunday.

Flytipping remains a major problem in Bradford and earlier this week what looked like a house-full of furniture was dumped outside the offices of New Vision Associates in Ventnor Street, Barkerend.

The company's administration manager and accountant Joanne Ball said: "Every week I have to ring the Council for them to come out and remove rubbish from the side of our building. It's a disgrace.

"Whoever is doing this dumping should be ashamed of themselves. Surely it's more difficult to carry the rubbish to this area than it is to just pick up the phone and arrange for the Council to collect it from their home.

"The day before there were a few bins bags and a couple of chairs. Yesterday morning I arrived and it looked like a house move."

The new site is only for the disposal of household waste - trade waste will be strictly forbidden.
