A seven-year-old girl left blind after complications following her birth has been introduced to the guide dog named in her honour.

Ella, a black Labrador puppy, takes her name from Ella Sparrow, of Baildon and the pair met at the Marriott Hollins Hall Hotel, where a recent golf tournament raised £10,000 for Guide Dogs for the Blind.

The event was organised by Mark Smith, who has sponsored six guide dogs in four years.

Mr Smith has raised £30,000 after setting up a fund in memory of friend PC Andy Winterburn, who died in an accident in Bradford in 2003.

Mr Smith said: "Andy dedicated his life to taking care of people so sponsoring guide dogs who will spend their working lives looking after others seemed a fitting tribute."

Ella's parents Tim and Sally have held fundraisers of their own for the charity. Mr Sparrow said: "She has been looking forward to meeting Ella the dog for a long time. I have to say a big thank you to everyone involved."

Debbie Wheeler, of the Yorkshire branch for Guide Dogs for the Blind, said: "Mark's and Ella's family's support has been essential as we receive no grants or Lottery funding."
