A new exhibition featuring dramatic images of ancient sites across the UK is set to open tomorrow at the University of Bradford's Gallery II.

As part of the Ritual Landscape' exhibition, by West Yorkshire photographer Steve Francis, visitors can expect to see stunning images of well-known ancient sites such as Avebury and Stonehenge.

But many other pictures are of smaller scale and less accessible sites, such as Midgley Moor near Halifax.

The exhibition documents the sites photographically, exploring the context of ancient remains within the landscape and examining what they might mean to people socially, culturally and politically.

Steve Francis said: "These sites represent an abiding mystery - relics of a lost civilisation that raise questions about our history, our knowledge of the world and our place in it.

"Our landscape is ancient and still contains the remains of monumental building of our Neolithic forebears from up to 5,000 years ago.

"These megaliths, stone circles and earthworks often form part of a much larger ritual landscape."

Ritual Landscape' runs until Friday, July 27. The exhibition is open weekdays from 11am to 5pm, or 6pm on Thursdays, and is free to all.

Gallery II is in the Chesham Building on the main campus of the university.
