Yorkshire Water has assured customers that drinking water remains safe following the floods.

But the Bradford-based firm has issued advice to people whose homes have been flooded to take sensible hygiene precautions to ensure their taps are clean.

A spokesman said: "Yorkshire's drinking water supply network was maintained in full working order throughout the recent flooding and the company's reservoirs have been declared safe following emergency safety checks.

"Yorkshire Water's incident management team have been working closely with local authorities and emergency services over the last two weeks to provide help and assistance.

"The company is also helping customers around the region who have suffered damage from internal sewer flooding.

"In some areas there is also the possibility that flood water includes water which has been forced from the sewers by the deluge of rain and river flooding.

"For those that have suffered flooding in their homes, all surfaces should be cleaned with hot soapy water and disinfected and fabrics laundered.

"If water taps have been submerged in flood water these should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected."
