A LAW student crashed into a set of traffic lights during an 80mph police chase, a court heard.

Kamran Khan, 22, was spotted by police speeding on Hollingwood Lane, Bradford, at around 2.40am on December 16 last year.

After they gave chase, he made off onto Cemetery Road, reaching speeds of 80mph while also running a red light and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Prosecutor Gerald Hendron told Bradford Crown Court that when Khan reached the junction with Thornton Road, he lost control and hit the traffic light post.

He was said to have told police: “I just panicked, I’m sorry, I don’t have a licence.”

Khan, of Washington Street, Girlington, Bradford, had pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving without a licence or insurance at an earlier hearing.

John Bottomley, for Khan, said his client was studying law and also working full-time, acting as the “breadwinner” for his family and caring for his father, who he said suffered from mental health issues.

Judge Neil Davey QC said Khan’s police chase had been mercifully brief “more by good luck than good judgement”.

He ordered him to perform 100 hours of unpaid work and imposed a 12-month driving ban.
