The grieving family of doting dad Frank Conway, who was knocked down and killed as he apparently fled from a group of men, has paid tribute to him.

Frank, 33, died after he collided with a recovery vehicle in Canal Road, Bradford, in the early hours Friday. Police believe he may have been running away from four or five men in a dark car when the accident happened.

His family has now urged members of the public with information about why he died to come forward.

Mr Conway, who had an 11-year-old son, Charlie, grew up in the Huddersfield area but moved to Bradford to be closer to his son 18 months ago. He worked at Tesco on Canal Road until his death.

In a statement, his mother, Carol England, father Michael Conway, sisters Sarah and Katrina, brother Kieran and Charlie, said he was wonderful and would be very much missed.

The family said: "We still can't believe Frank has been taken from us. We feel numb, but there are moments when all of a sudden it hits us that he has gone forever, and that is very hard to bear.

"Frank was a very caring and loving person who was full of fun. He would always put other people before himself and was extremely proud of his son and never stopped talking about him.

"Charlie was always his first priority and we will be concentrating on giving all our love to him and making sure he always knows how much his dad loved him."

The family said they were being helped by the large number of phone calls, cards and flowers from people who knew Frank.

Mr Conway was struck by the recovery vehicle in Canal Road, near to the junctions with Hillam Road and Sidings Close, at about 1.45am last Friday. He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary but died that evening.

The investigation into his death is being led by Detective Superintendent Chris Thompson, of West Yorkshire Police's Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, who has a team of detectives working from an incident room in Bradford.

He said: "Our investigation is centred on finding out what made Frank run into Canal Road.

"Witnesses have told us there was some kind of incident involving Frank, his 26-year-old friend from Huddersfield, and four or five men in a dark coloured mark 3 Ford Fiesta with blacked out windows. This was immediately prior to the collision in which Frank was hit by the recovery vehicle.

"Even though it was the early hours, we know there were other motorists on the road. If you saw anything, no matter how insignificant you may have thought it was, we need to hear from you. A man has died and a family is grieving and they need answers."

A 26-year-old man and a 17-year-old youth have been arrested in connection with the inquiry and granted police bail pending further inquiries.
