Young members of Down Syndrome Support Group Bradford will be learning how to swim thanks to a donation.

The group has received £910 from the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation, which will pay for fortnightly swimming sessions for one year for ten children with Down Syndrome and their parents.

The group offers support, information and training to parents and professionals living and working with children who have Down Syndrome.

They organise various events for children and their families including day trips, Saturday morning family sessions, speech and language group sessions, an early development group, dance lessons and coffee mornings.

Dr Wendy Uttley, group co-ordinator and trainer at the charity, said: "We continuously aim to promote a positive image of people with Down Syndrome, raise awareness through our actions and training and encourage all involved to seek full inclusion and independence for future happiness and fulfilment of our children."

Chris Hill, manager at the society's John Street branch in Bradford, said: "Swimming is great fun for young and old alike and can help youngsters to establish their independence, develop their communication skills and increase their fitness levels while still having a great time."
