THE former Bradford & Bingley site has been sold and will become a supermarket.
Sainsbury’s, the site’s owner, has today confirmed it has sold the land to fellow supermarket giant Lidl.
The site is currently surrounded by wooden boards covered in a green plant-style design and has previously been described as an eyesore.
Sainsbury’s bought the site in 2010 and won planning permission to demolish the building and construct a new store in 2011. But in April 2015, as demolition was going ahead, the chain decided to put the site on the market.
A Sainsbury’s spokesman said: “We have agreed a deal with Lidl, who will be bringing forward plans for a new store on the former Bradford and Bingley site.”
Councillor Mark Shaw (Con, Bingley) said: “At least now we will be getting the site cleared up and put it to use.
“They have come to a decision and its not going to be left, as it has been for a long time.
“It will give free parking in the town centre and get the hoardings down.”
