A SUPERMARKET in Manningham has been told a canopy installed without planning permission “causes significant harm to the character and appearance” of the area.

The canopy at Manningham Superstore was the subject of a retrospective planning application, refused by Bradford Council this week.

Submitted by Mr Javed, it said approval would “safeguard the jobs of existing staff.”

The Carlisle Road shop is on the edge of the Manningham Conservation Area.

Plans for a similar canopy were refused in 2007. In 2010 plans for a higher quality canopy were approved but not built.

Officers said: “The canopy constructed causes significant harm to the character and appearance of the host building and the wider street scene due to its poor quality materials and its prominence in the street scene.

“The application claims the canopy is required to ensure the business can continue to operate. If a canopy is required, the applicants should consider revisiting the application approved in 2010 which would have seen the replacement of this canopy with a much better structure.”
