An artist has proved it is never too late to follow your dream as he showcases his first solo exhibition - aged 90.

Leslie Warburton has unveiled his Exhibition of Calligraphy in the Cafe Gallery at Bradford Industrial Museum, which runs until Sunday, July 8.

Mr Warburton, of Frizinghall, Bradford, decided it was time to take up a new hobby at the age of 80 and took a 12-month Open College course in Calligraphy.

There was then no stopping him and he began creating colourful pieces of art for every letter of the alphabet. Now, more than 40 pieces are on show at the museum.

He is no stranger to exhibiting his work, after joining Bradford Art Club 60 years ago and Shipley Art Club in the 1970s. He and his wife, Joan, 79, who met at Shipley Art Club, had a showcase at the opening of Shipley library in 1985.

Mrs Warburton said: "Leslie took calligraphy up for a bit of fun. He had been interested in it and wanted to confirm what he was doing was right and now he can interpret it in his own way.

"The designs have all been his own ideas, it has been wonderful."

Mr Warburton said: "I am going to keep on with it. I really enjoy it and our days just flash by, it is such a wonderful hobby and we enjoy it together."

Mrs Warburton is set to showcase her work at the gallery next April.

Museum audience development officer Brenda Weller said: "The new exhibition and The Grand Trunk Road exhibition we are running in the main gallery, look really excellent. They complement one another because they are so bright and colourful."

A children's art day will be held at the museum this Sunday from 2pm to 4pm.

The Cafe Gallery, Moorside Road, Eccleshill, is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm and on Sundays from noon to 5pm. Admission is free.
