People are being warned that poor kitchen hygiene can lead to potentially-devastating fires.

Firefighters are reminding residents that fat residue left in the bottom of grill pans or around cooker rings will eventually ignite.

The warning comes after a flat fire in Tyersal Crescent, Tyersal, at 11pm on Sunday.

"The occupier had switched on all the rings on her electric cooker to aid warmth throughout the flat," said Harvey Stewart, watch manager at Bradford fire station. "Because of the state of cleanliness of the cooker it ignited the fat residue."

The flat was smoke-logged after the incident and firefighters used a positive-pressure fan to clear the air.

Mr Stewart said: "If you leave fat in the bottom of a grill pan or residue in the bottom of the rings, it will ignite in the end."
