A former Bradford Park Avenue footballer, who is facing a jail sentence for drug dealing, had his case adjourned again on Monday so a soccer boss can give evidence on his behalf.
Daniel Sheriffe, 26, who was jailed for manslaughter two years ago, has been warned to expect a prison sentence after pleading guilty to supplying heroin. He was due to be sentenced at Leeds Crown Court on Monday but his case was put back until next week for a football manager to speak as a character witness. Alun Jones, for Sheriffe, asked for the adjournment because Garforth Town boss Simon Clifford was on holiday.
Mr Evans told Judge Ian Dobkin: "He is going to talk about the defendant's activities at Garforth Town football club and the advances and progress he has made since his release from prison."
Judge Dobkin said it was a serious offence and Sheriffe should have the chance to call evidence. He adjourned the case until June 14 and renewed bail. But he warned him: "That does not mean your sentence has been determined. All sentencing options are open."
Sheriffe, of Hamilton Avenue, Chapeltown, Leeds, pleaded guilty in April to supplying heroin last August.
He had been sent to custody for three years for supplying crack cocaine when he was 18. And he was jailed for three and a half years in February 2005 after he was convicted of the manslaughter of a 17-year-old student outside a Leeds nightclub in August 2004.
Jose Augusto was fatally injured when he hit his head on the floor after Sheriffe punched him in the jaw.
He was arrested in connection with the killing after playing for Park Avenue. He now has had no connection with the club.
