A former mill-worker who has lived in Bradford all her life celebrated her 100th birthday on Sunday with a party for her family and friends.

Annie Sugden, a resident of Springfield nursing home, Western Way, Woodside, was "absolutely thrilled" when she received her message from the Queen.

Her niece, Anne Pyne, of Folly Hall Close, Wibsey, said her aunt was a caring and independent person.

The 58-year-old said: "That is what I think has got her to this great age, she has never fussed or bothered, just got on with things.

"She is a much loved aunt, great aunt and great, great aunt and she has been a great neighbour over the years.

Mrs Sugden worked in the mills around Bradford from the age of 14 until she retired at 60.

She was married for 50 years until her husband, Wilfred, passed away.

The eldest of five, Mrs Sugden looked after her younger siblings before she started her life of work, which included a stint of working on the railways in the area during the Second World War.

Mrs Sugden has also been a regular fundraiser for the Royal British Legion's poppy appeal and was a regular blood donor from 1948 until she retired.

To celebrate her birthday the choir from St Michael's and All Angels CE Primary School also visited the home to perform.
