Female staff at a Bradford medical practice are busy making last-minute preparations before pulling on their trainers to run 5km to raise money for cancer research.

Lister Park in Manningham is again the venue for Bradford's Race for Life on Sunday and thousands of runners are expected to turn out for Cancer Research UK's single biggest event.

Last year it raked in more than £320,000 in the Bradford district alone and organisers predict an even bigger haul of cash this year which will be used to help scientists find a cure for cancer.

Fourteen staff, including doctors, at Bowling Hall Medical Practice in Rooley Lane, Bradford, are taking part, not only for all the patients they know who have cancer, but also in tribute to a much loved colleague who died in March last year, just three months after being diagnosed with kidney cancer.

Karen Broadhead worked as a finance assistant at the practice when she was diagnosed with cancer. Her death left colleagues devastated.

Chris Brennan, business manager at the practice, who will be cheering on the team from the sidelines, said: "It went from a couple of staff members saying they fancied taking part and just escalated from there.

"The catalyst was really wanting to do it for Karen. Her death was a massive shock to us - she was a much loved colleague and so full of life.

"A number of staff and their families have been touched by cancer in their own lives and we have a number of patients diagnosed with cancer.

"With this combination of factors we wanted to do something to raise money for cancer research. We are on target to raise about £1,500.

"We have a collection going in the practice if anyone wants to donate.

"Race for Life is a fantastic event. It is a very emotional day and the sheer numbers of people taking part makes you realise just how many people this awful disease touches.

"People of all ages and abilities take part to raise as much money as possible."

There will be two races taking place in Lister Park. The first sets off at 10.30am and the second at 2.30pm.
