Worshippers at Mosques in Bradford are being asked to dig deep for the Darfur and Chad Emergency appeal.

The appeal is being run by a number of groups including Islamic Relief, Oxfam Christian Aid and the Red Cross, who have come together to form the Disasters Emergency Committee.

Imams from all 15 Mosques have been approached to urge them to speak to their congregations about the worsening situation in Darfur.

An estimated 4.5 million people have been affected by conflict in the region and with the approach of the monsoon season there are fears of malaria and diarrhoea epidemics.

It is the first time Islamic Relief has made such a request.

Wassim Aslam of Islamic Relief in Bradford said: "We have approached the Imams at all the Bradford Mosques asking them to talk about Darfur and Chad during Friday prayers.

"We are hoping to get a large response from the Muslim community in Bradford.

"People can donate throughout June and July and we will hold a number of activities and events in the Bradford area."

If you wish to donate you can phone 0870 60 60 900 or visit www.dec.org.uk. Cheques can also be made payable to Darfur & Chad Crisis and sent to PO Box 999, London, EC3A 3AA.
