Commuters in Bingley will be faced with further delays as Yorkshire Water start work in the town on Monday.

Temporary traffic lights are set to be erected on Main Street for at least three weeks as the company upgrades pipes as part of a £4.3 million project, which has incorporated Saltaire.

The news will come as a blow to motorists who are already facing one-way traffic at Ireland Bridge, in Harden Road, where temporary lights have been erected while strengthening work is carried out by Bradford Council.

Yorkshire Water project manager Richard Long said: "We accept this is a busy road despite the bypass so there isn't really a good time to start digging it up.

"We will probably have to use temporary lights to ensure the crews can work in safety, which will mean sections of the road will be reduced to one lane.

"However, we would like to assure customers we will do our best to minimise disruption by completing this part of the scheme as quickly as possible. At the moment, we're estimating the work will take about three weeks so we should be out by the end of the month.

"In the meantime, we hope the local community will understand the project is essential if Bingley is to continue to benefit from a high-quality and reliable supply of tap water in years to come.

"Naturally, we would like to apologise for any disruption in advance but we'll do our best to make sure we're not around for long, while the benefits should last generations."

Residents have also been warned to be on their guard against bogus callers while Yorkshire Water and contractors Laing O'Rourke are in the area.

Thieves posing as water company officials often try to con their way into properties by claiming they need to check the supply.

Genuine employees of both companies carry identity cards which can be checked by phoning 08451 242424. Engineers won't mind waiting outside while their credentials are verified.
