North Yorkshire Police are launching a tough campaign against drink-driving.
Drivers under the influence of drugs will also be targeted in the clampdown from Monday, June 4, for a week.
New Deputy Chief Constable Adam Briggs, pictured, who takes up his post on Monday, said: "Driving plus drink or drugs equals deadly danger. It is as simple as that."
Mr Briggs said 1,834 drivers and motorcycle riders in North Yorkshire were found to be over the prescribed drink limit last year, "a totally unacceptable number".
He said: "That means that every day there are five drivers or riders who feel they have the right to gamble with other people's lives. That attitude cannot be tolerated."
Throughout the week officers will be breath-testing all drivers and riders involved in crashes, mounting extra patrols, and setting up surprise stop-checks.
Mr Briggs warned: "This is a year-round problem that we will combat with unabated energy."
