The oldest amateur distance race in the world, the annual Bradford Whit Walk, took place in Bradford today.
Despite inclement weather conditions around 20 athletes competed in the race from Bradford to Ilkley. The event started in John Street at 10am.
The cold and wet deterred crowds, although a few hardy supporters were present to urge the athletes on.
The walk was first staged in 1903. Perhaps the most famous participant over the years was Bradford walking legend Frank Holt. In 1923 at the age of 28 he won the Whit Walk in record time. In those days walking was a huge spectator sport with thousands thronging the finish.
In recent years the event has been supported by Bradford Council's Sport and Leisure Service. A 14-mile and more traditional 32-mile walk are held.
Steve Warner, the Council's head of sport and leisure, said: ""Although it is very challenging it also takes in some of the best landscape in the district."
Walkers are pictured at the race start.
